NACELLE / GEARBOX APPLICATIONS

Wind turbines are exposed to harsh environmental conditions, including temperature extremes, humidity, dust, and saltwater exposure in offshore applications.

Wind turbine gearboxes are expected to operate reliably for their intended lifetime, typically 20-25 years. Engineers need to schedule maintenance, inspections, and repairs to minimize downtime and optimize turbine performance.

Nord-Lock Group provides solutions to improve the installation and maintenance of the nacelle and gearbox, reducing downtime and improving structural integrity.

High variable loads

Wind turbine gearboxes are subjected to high torque and variable loads due to wind speed fluctuations. This can lead to fatigue and premature failure of gears and bearings.

Superbolt® EzFit and HyFit expansion bolts have a split, tapered bore sleeve to provide a true radial force that translates to greater flange connection rigidity. This eliminates harmful micro-movements at the split line.

Common issues:

Dynamic loads and vibrations

Wind turbine gearboxes can generate significant vibration and noise during operation. These issues can result from misalignment, unbalanced loads, gear tooth damage, or improper lubrication.

Nord-Lock® washers can be applied in the assembly of the nacelle, where they help maintain the preload on critical bolted connections. This ensures the integrity of the connections between various components within the nacelle, such as the generator, gearbox, and control systems, even in the presence of dynamic loads and vibrations.

Tightening bolts in limited radial spaces

Accessing and maintaining wind turbine gearboxes can be challenging due to their location in the nacelle, often at considerable heights.

Boltight® Typhoon+ hydraulic tensioners are specially designed for space-restricted applications such as wind turbines.

Remote monitoring of preload

Performing maintenance and repairs on offshore wind turbines can be challenging due to their remote location and limited accessibility. Effective remote operation capabilities help minimize the need for onsite personnel and reduce maintenance costs.

Superbolt® Load-Sensing Tensioners (LST) replace traditional nuts to provide remote preload monitoring and a live reading of data.
